In 2020 a group of Orthodox Christians who attended St. Alexander Nevsky Church (Richmond, ME) began worshiping in a home in Surry, Maine. Divine Services were led by Archpriest Chad Williams and Priest Nathan Williams. Our goal was to eventually found an Orthodox Church that would be close to where we lived, in Hancock County. We have been praying and searching for a Church building for our community for several years. We are a small mission, but we have grown substantially by adding new members and Baptizing people who have converted to the Orthodox Faith.
We have been blessed to find a church building that is the answer to our prayers. The former North Bucksport United Methodist Church is a beautiful historic building that has been maintained with love and care for over 150 years. We have a contract to purchase the church and the closing is expected to be in July of this year.
We are now asking you to help us pay for the purchase, survey and closing costs. After we buy the Church, we will need to retrofit the church for Orthodox Worship. This will involve elevating a portion of the East end of the church, which will be the location of the Iconostasis, Altar, Vestry and Sacristy. We can then build an iconostasis. Exterior improvements will include creating a sign, and adding a cupola, among other things.
Our cumulative goal is $100,000.00 which will allow us to bring the light of Orthodoxy to a town that has never held an Orthodox Church.
We seek to complete our fundraising in time to receive Metropolitan Nicholas on September 11, the Feast of the Beheading of St. John the Baptist. Vladyka has expressed hopes to come and bless the building at that time.
You can help us buy and renovate our Church by using the donation button below, or by making a contribution at services or by mail. We also welcome pledges of future gifts. Thank you and God Bless you!
Currently we have 2 goals for this campaign.
1. Collect enough donations that we can purchase our Church Temple.
2. Gather sufficient funds to finance the transformation of the building into a space for Orthodox Worship. This will involve improvements to the interior, exterior and grounds of the church.
